I can't use Windows without installing Cygwin, but I've never really had too much of a problem with it using disk space though. I think you can delete the folder Cygwin stores the packages in but every time you update Cygwin it will download the packages it needs. When installing packages for the first time, the setup program does not install every package. Only the minimal base packages from the Cygwin distribution are installed by default, which takes up about 100 MB. Clicking on categories and packages in the setup program package installation screen allows you to select what is installed or updated. A Cygwin Base + Devel installation comes to about 10 GiB. A Cygwin Base + TeX category installation takes about 5 GiB. If you install only your native language's support package, it comes to about 3.7 GiB instead. All of the -doc packages combined chew up about 5 GiB of disk space. Cygwin will need at least 2GB of disk space to download and an additional 4GB of disk space to install. If you don't have more than 2GB of free disk space on your C: drive, you need to create the 'Cygwin Setup' folder somewhere else. Go to your Desktop, click open the Cygwin Setup folder and click on setup-x8664.exe. If you get a screen asking you about permissions, please give permission to run the setup program.
