Hl 340 Usb To Serial Driver Ubuntu
A pre-compiled binary for CH340/341 (HL340/341) USB-to-Serial UART Driver for Raspberry Pi. This is a very common chip, especially in those millions of esp8266-based dev boards (also often referred to as NodeMCU). Raspberry Pi doesn't have an out of the box driver for it, so plugging your device into RPI's USB won't do much other than power it. I found it surprisingly difficult to locate working instructions and binaries, hence this repository came to life.
I tried to install the package in Ubuntu 7.04 with 2.6.20 kernel version and it failed doing so. How can i install the driver to my Ubuntu box? This is HL-340 USB serial port (COM) USB to RS232 USB Nine Serial Line Support Windows 7-64. USB to RS232 conversion cable for USB and serial devices easily connect serial devices with features such as Plug and play, hot-swappable.
The driver will work both for CH340 & CH341 chips. Sometimes you will see the HL340/HL341 designation, it's just different names for the same hardware.
Download the ch34x.ko onto the Raspberry Pi. See the Releases tab above. E.g.
Install the kernel module:
Verify it's showing up in the kernel. You should see the ch341 listed:
Verify the module has been installed (so it's picked up on reboot). You should see the ch34x.ko file listed:
If not, try running
Plug In ESP8266
Plug in your dev board into any of the Raspberry Pi's USB port. A few things should happen. Again, look for the 340 strings:
At this point you're all set. Upload the new firmware to esp8266 and, given it prints output to Serial at 115200 baud rate, this should print stuff:
Normally isn't required, but if for some reason you need to compile it for a different kernel version of Raspberry Pi, here it goes.
Download the CH34x Driver Sources
On the Raspberry Pi, go to http://www.wch.cn/download/CH341SER_LINUX_ZIP.html and click that big blue Download button. This is the manufacturer's website, but it's all in Chinese.
Prepare the Kernel Build Environment
Build the Driver Module
This will produce the ch34x.ko file, which you can install as described above.
There are a number of Prolific Serial drivers and these have been listed below. There is also an explanation here (USB to RS232 Driver) which also uses a Prolific USB driver. If the Prolific USB to serial drivers below do not work then see the USB to RS232 driver for more information as it uses more than one option.

Install the Prolific USB to Serial driver on Windows
- Double-click the PL-2303 Windows Driver Installer program;
- The Prolific driver will ask you to install the PL-2303 USB-to-Serial driver will be installed on your computer;
- The PL-2303 Driver Installer program will now install the Prolific drivers;
- Now close the installer program when it is installed.
Check the Prolific USB to Serial driver on Windows
Check the driver check for the “Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port” device in Device Manager;
Check the “Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port” driver version by right-clicking on the Prolific Port and then click on “driver” on the top to check the driver version that you have on your computer. The Prolific USB to Serial Driver date will show below as is shown on the picture below.
Error 10 on the Prolific USB to Serial driver
If you get an error that the Prolific USB to Serial Adapter is not working then you will need to uninstall the driver on your computer and remove the Prolific USB to Serial adpater from your computer. Report and connect the Prolific adapter again and then wait until it looks for the Prolific USB to Serial driver. Direct the software to where you extracted the driver to and install the Prolific driver from there.
Advanced Settings on the Prolific USB to Serial driver
You can change the port settings on the Prolific USB to Serial Adapter settings as shown below. You will need to click on the port options on the top of the menu and then click on the advanced options which holds the advanced port options on the Prolific adapter as shown below.
Note what each of these advanced port settings does as shown below:
- USB Selective Suspend Idle Timer
This is the Idle Timer for the PL2303 chip to enter suspend mode and the default for this is 10 seconds. You can change this on the Prolific USB to serial adapter. Check your chip as this does not work on the PL2303SA chip. Also note that for the PL2303HXD/EA/RA, you need to write to OTPROM first.
- Disable DTR/RTS INIT signal
By default this is enabled. This will disable the DTR/RTS pin initialisation signal during driver load to disable the serial mouse or modem from being detected. Check this setting if your Prolific USB driver is not detecting your serial modem or serial mouse. The Prolific USB to Serial Adapter normally has this enabled as stated before, however for troubleshooting it is always best to check the advanced settings.
- Change DTR/RTS INIT Level Shift
The signal needs to be enabled as the default for this setting is TTL=HIGH as well as RS232=LOW.
- Disable Device USB Serial Number in Windows Registry
This is very important if you have many devices. The default for this settings is enabled. If you check this it will ignore PL2303 device Serial Numbers. If you disabled this then each PL2303 device even with different USB serial numbers will be treated as same device. This is more for troubleshooting your serial devices.
- Driver Buffer Size
This will set the buffer size of the serial device. The default settings for this is 4096.
